This article begins with the story of a 15 year old Kenyan boy, William Githira, about his life while living on the streets in Nairobi, Kenya.  Many young boys and girls are forced to live on the streets each year and this article stated an estimate that about 250,000 to 300,000 children currently live on the streets in urban areas.  About 60,000 of those children live on the streets of the nation's capital, Nairobi.

The article  explains:
"The United Nations has defined the term ‘street children’ to include “any boy or girl… for whom the street in the widest sense of the word … has become his or her habitual abode and/or source of livelihood, and who is inadequately protected, supervised, or directed by responsible adults.”

Homelessness in Kenya

In 2012, about 2 million Kenyans were homeless and the number is steadily increasing by about 200,000 Kenyans per year.  About 68% of all Kenyans do not own land and have a higher risk of contracting infections and diseases.  They also are susceptible to ticks, jiggers, and fleas due to not having a secure home.  In addition to this statistic, about 60% of the urban populations in Kenya live in the slums of cities.
Habitat for Humanity (International) has helped approximately 7,200 families in 250 communities.  These communities are spread out around the country in 9 different regions.  They have provided low income housing around the country to attempt in reducing the number of those living in the slums

Catholic relief services

Since 1965, CRS has been working to provide support to the homeless and impoverished in Kenya.  Their main focus has been on emergency relief to help communities survive droughts and food shortages, and maternal and child health programs to help reduce high infant mortality rates. Recently, the agency has shifted their focus from direct relief and food distribution to a development program that works through partners. CRS programs now support children orphaned by HIV, and community-based efforts to increase household incomes, improve health and sanitation, and enhance  local agriculture output.
